Space Traveler Discloses Depression Following Deluge of Backlash Following Journey
A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her emotional downturn after enduring a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission in the spring, which also included high-profile passengers.
The much-publicized journey was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response overshadowed her achievement under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a public message, referring to a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the days following the flight.
She portrayed the news reports and online discourse as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she confessed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Buried Under Misogyny
Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to gynecological science and operated research during the flight, said every professional achievement – including her lab work and astronaut training to the symbolic importance of her heritage – was overshadowed under the deluge of misogyny.
She is widely recognized for her tireless campaigning championing the cause of survivors of assault.
Her own goal of reaching space was paused after surviving a rape during her university years, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
A Path to Recovery
Months following reaching space, she has stated the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she acknowledged the well-wishers whose messages of encouragement helped save her. “You were my salvation,” she wrote.
She added that despite the negativity, considerable good had come out of the flight, including elevated attention for her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.
The Historic Journey
The computer-piloted spacecraft lifted off from Texas in April, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that exceeded the edge of space.
The group of women also featured accomplished professionals from various fields.
The company behind the mission is a commercial aerospace company launched by a well-known tech mogul.
