One Piece Concludes a 27-Year Tradition in 2026

This marks the conclusion of an iconic period for ongoing anime, with the production studio announcing a new production schedule for One Piece, which has been airing for more than 25 years and included numerous non-canon storylines. Commencing in the new year, once the Egghead Island arc wraps up, the animated series will take a three-month hiatus until spring, when the Elbaph arc kicks off.

New Release Strategy

From now on, the series will release two seasons every year for a cap of 26 episodes. Toei states this will enable the anime to “explore further into the heart of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more material, rhythm, and pacing of the source material.” However, Toei conclude by hinting at “thrilling developments” during the series' break, which suggests additional related projects, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, set to premiere in the interim.

Learning from Past Breaks

The One Piece anime previously took a six-month break that started in October 2024 and ended in April 2025. The hiatus was for the production team to enhance the visuals and let the manga to build a lead to prevent a faster anime pace and repetitive summaries. The show couldn't benefit more from this break, and it has managed to supply fans with countless fight scenes, superior graphics, and less filler than ever before.

Embracing Seasonal Format

While a few summary installments appeared during this season, the positive effects of this new production schedule far surpass the odd pause in the story. This also gives the manga, which is presently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to extend its lead on the adaptation. Per the news, this may result in a single installment of the series covering one chapter, with some alternatively handling more material or additional to make up for scheduling.

This concludes of an era for anime, as One Piece is the final major title to abandon the old-school way of production, which focused on being on air for almost the entire year. It's the reason why iconic series such as Bleach, and naturally itself have numerous side stories, and the quality of the art can vary widely between one episode and the following. Nowadays, series creation is organized in cours, with a couple maximum coming out each year, allowing for better quality and greater accuracy to the original work.
