There are many candidates to claim the designation as “world’s most significant innovation.” The circular axle. The movable type. The combustion motor.
According to a new book, however, that title belongs to a mechanised timber mill conceived through Dutchman Corneliszoon van Uitgeest during 1593.
“Prior to automated sawing, building a modest merchant vessel required around 10 lumberjacks working over three months,” notes Jaime Dávila. “With wind-driven sawmills, the same quantity of cut lumber might be manufactured within seven days.”
Owing to this rapid mechanical saw, that converted timber into boards using almost no manual labor, Dutch builders were able to construct vessels more quickly than any other nation, which unleashed one hundred years of Netherlands maritime, economic as well as artistic dominance across Europe and the globe.
The First Genuine Manufacturing Machine
The inventor's sawmill, contends Dávila, represented “humanity’s initial true factory apparatus.” A wind turbine rotated a gear. A single part converted the rotary motion into up-and-down motion to power the saw. Another component transformed that same rotary movement into a lateral motion advancing the timber to the blade. A ratchet system moved the wood forward a measured step each cycle.
“Each element seemed modest by itself. The Dutchman’s brilliance was to integrate them in order that the machine acted in a precisely synchronized sequence, sawing with each descending stroke while moving on every upward stroke. It was an astonishingly intelligent application of basic parts.”
